21-COUNT INDICTMENT

Not guilty plea entered in tax fraud case

Joseph Prokop, a former National Football League punter and a defendant in a massive tax fraud case, pleaded not guilty Friday to charges listed in a 21-count indictment.

Prokop is one of three men charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States. He is alleged to have interfered with the Internal Revenue Service, aided in preparing false income tax returns and engaged in mail fraud. Alan Rodrigues, a former pit boss and casino owner, and Weston Coolidge, have already pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The men are associated with the National Audit Defense Network, a Las Vegas company that the U.S. Justice Department sued five years ago. The government estimated the tax advisory company had served 640,000 customers and caused $324 million in underpayment of income taxes.

According to the indictment, the company told customers they could receive tax breaks and deductions under the Americans with Disabilities Act, but the tax benefits were fraudulent.

Prokop, 48, was an NFL punter from 1985 until 1992. His longest stint was with the New York Jets.

Haines died of multiple gunshot wounds in what coroner's officials have ruled a homicide.

Las Vegas police said officers fired their weapons because the man had two guns and was attempting to enter his home. Police attempted to negotiate with the man for about 15 minutes before he rose from a sitting position and moved toward the house.

LOS ALAMOS, Calif.

Six dead after SUV slams into tree

An SUV filled with foreign students swerved off a highway, slammed into a tree and burst into flames, killing six of the seven people aboard, California Highway Patrol officials said.

All but one of those in the vehicle that crashed Thursday evening near Los Alamos, 140 miles northwest of Los Angeles, were foreign students studying in San Francisco: four from France and one each from Russia and Turkey. The remaining passenger, a 30-year-old San Francisco man and U.S. citizen, was among the dead.

When the SUV drifted into the dirt median on Highway 101, the driver, Jeanne Ostrowski, 19, swerved to the right, Sgt. Ben Ruth said. The SUV then veered off the road and slammed into a cottonwood tree. No other vehicles were involved.

A witness helped the driver out of the burning vehicle. Ostrowski, who is French, suffered major injuries and is in serious condition at a hospital, Ruth said.
