Woman arrested in fatal hit-and-run case

A 22-year-old Las Vegas woman was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence Saturday after striking and killing a bicyclist on the Strip.

Melody McLallen was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche south on Las Vegas Boulevard south of Russell Road when she hit the 55-year-old bicyclist, who was traveling in front of her in the right lane about 6:45 a.m., Las Vegas police said.

She fled the scene and was arrested at Las Vegas Boulevard and the Las Vegas Beltway minutes later, police said. After being taken to University Medical Center for minor injuries, she was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit and run resulting in injury or death.

Both charges are felonies. She is being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

The bicyclist, a Las Vegas man whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was thrown from the bicycle and into the Chevrolet's windshield before falling to the ground.

GANG INVOLVEMENT POSSIBLE

Two people shot, killed in L.A. neighborhood

Two people were fatally shot Friday in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, police said.

Officer Karen Smith said one of the victims died at the scene Friday afternoon and the other died several hours later at a hospital.

She said investigators believe the shooting was gang-related because witnesses identified the shooter as a gang member. The shooter remains at large.
