ROLLED OVER

Man killed in crash of ATV in desert area

A 27-year-old man was killed in a single all-terrain vehicle crash in the desert area off Interstate 15 near Sloan, Las Vegas police said.

Two target shooters happened upon the wreck about 10 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Investigators believe the driver lost control and was ejected from the vehicle.

The 2007 Honda Rincon ATV then rolled over and landed on top of the victim, police said.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.

The wreck remains under investigation.

FATAL CRASH

Plane goes down near Sandy Valley, kills man

The pilot of an experimental plane was killed when the aircraft crashed near Sandy Valley about 9:50 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the circumstances that led to the crash of the Bonde TF-51D, a World War II-era type plane, was under investigation.

The pilot's identity was not immediately released.

DOWNED PLANE

Snowfall ends search at Fossett crash site

Recovery efforts around the site of adventurer Steve Fossett's downed plane near Mammoth Lakes, Calif., might not resume until summer, officials said.

Snowfall ended the search in the Sierra Nevada on Friday. Madera County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Erica Stuart said she did not expect weather conditions to improve enough for crews to return to the site this year.

Authorities said they completed most of what they needed to do on Friday when they removed debris from Fossett's plane and found three more bone fragments.

DRESS CODE VIOLATION

Four students arrested in bandana dispute

Four Fallon high school students were arrested after a flap over a dress code violation, authorities said.

Churchill County High School Principal Robbin Pedrett said the incident began Friday afternoon when a 17-year-old student refused to turn over a bandana to a staff member.

"It was on campus. We had every right to ask for it," Pedrett said.

The employee requested the assistance of a police officer, but the student refused to turn over the bandana to the officer and turned aggressive, officials said.

The officer asked for help from another officer, but the student still resisted as several other students gathered around him.

The 17-year-old and three classmates then were arrested on suspicion of interference with a public officer.

ADVOCACY GROUP

Berry crop credited for drop in bear calls

A Lake Tahoe bear advocacy group is crediting a bumper berry crop for a sharp drop in calls about bears this year.

Ann Bryant of the BEAR League said the group's call volume decreased from 100 to 200 a day last year to around 50 a day this year. Bryant said 12 bears have been killed by vehicles around Tahoe this year, compared with 78 last year.

The California Department of Fish and Game continues an investigation into a bear found dead along Highway 89 in August with its gall bladder removed.

Taking a bear's gall bladder is illegal. The organ can be sold on the black market for as much as $5,000.

Fish and Game officials said it appears the bear was accidentally hit by a vehicle, then someone removed the gall bladder. A surgical glove was found next to the carcass.
