SIERRA NEVADA
Female hiker dies after being rescued
A Sierra Nevada hiker has died at a Truckee hospital after being rescued by the Placer County, Calif., sheriff's search and rescue team.
Authorities said Phyllis Hall, 62, was one of four people found by rescuers Saturday morning on the Pacific Crest Trail near Tinker's Knob.
Placer County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Dellinger said the four used a cell phone to call 911 after suffering through a night of cold, rainy weather at more than 8,900 feet above sea level.
He said the hikers were not lost but had not anticipated the cold weather.
Authorities said it appeared Hall died from exposure.
FATAL ACCIDENT
Child dies after riding bike into path of truck
An 11-year-old on a bicycle was killed after riding into the path of a pickup Saturday morning, according to Las Vegas police.
Police said the bicyclist was heading east on Morris Street, near Nellis Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue, and didn't stop for a stop sign at Danica Way. The child rode into the path of a 2008 Ford F-350 traveling south on Danica about 9:30 a.m., according to police. The bicyclist was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where the child was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Ford, 21-year-old Pierce Thorns, was not injured. Police said failing to stop at the stop sign was the cause of the accident.
