Man shot, killed while stopped in traffic
A man was shot and killed while waiting in traffic on Owens Avenue near Martin L. King Boulevard on Tuesday morning.
Las Vegas police said the man, whose name was not released, was stopped westbound on Owens.
At 8:48 a.m., another man who was waiting in traffic got out of a car, walked to the victim's vehicle and fired several rounds into the driver's side window, police said.
The suspect then "calmly" walked to his vehicle, made a U-turn, and fled east on Owens, police said. The vehicle is described as a white 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with a black bra on the front. Its license plate is Las Vegas commemorative plate 22G6.
When officers arrived, they found the victim sitting in the driver's seat suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
As investigators processed the scene, a red, four-door Chevrolet Silverado pickup was facing west on Owens with the driver's side window shot out.

Las Vegas police officer arrested in case
A Las Vegas police officer was placed on paid administrative leave after being arrested earlier this week on misdemeanor charges of domestic violence and coercion, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Las Vegas police on Tuesday identified the officer arrested by Henderson police as William Miller, 36. He has been with the Metropolitan Police Department since August 2001.
Henderson police spokesman Todd Rasmussen said Miller was arrested about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Rasmussen said Miller posted bail from the Henderson Detention Center at 9 p.m. the same day.
Las Vegas police said Miller was arrested at his home. They added that an internal investigation will be conducted concurrently with Henderson police's criminal investigation.

35-year-old man killed at apartment complex
A 35-year-old man was gunned down in an apartment complex on Martin L. King Boulevard near U.S. Highway 95 on Monday night.
Las Vegas police were called to the Desert Park Apartments at 10 p.m. for a call of somebody being shot in the courtyard of the complex.
Officers arrived to find the man suffering from several gunshot wounds. He died at the scene. His name was not released.

Las Vegas man dies in Interstate 15 crash
A Las Vegas man died after losing control of his pickup on Interstate 15 between Las Vegas and Mesquite early Tuesday morning.
The man, whose name was not released, was driving a Nissan truck north about 30 miles northeast of Las Vegas when he lost control and slid into the median, Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Kevin Honea said.
The truck struck the inside guardrail of the southbound lanes and flipped over at 5:20 a.m., Honea said. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
LOBBYING DEAL
Henderson board OKs contract with Perkins
Henderson's new lobbyist should have no trouble finding his way around Carson City.
City Council members on Tuesday night signed off on a $10,000 per month contract for Assembly speaker turned lobbyist Richard Perkins.
The 47-year-old Perkins retired as Henderson police chief in September after 25 years with the department. A short time later, he launched his own public affairs firm called the Perkins Company.
Henderson is his first client. Shortly before Tuesday's meeting, Perkins' agreement with the city was revised from a two-year, $240,000 deal to a guaranteed one-year contract with an option for a one-year extension at the discretion of the city manager.
The revised contract was approved without discussion. Councilman Steve Kirk cast the only vote against the deal.
Perkins left the Legislature in 2006 after 14 years in office, the final six of them as speaker.
The lifelong Henderson resident now joins a lobbying team that includes two other private lobbyists and two city employees.
When the Legislature is not in session, Perkins will be called on to brief the City Council on new state laws, assist in dealing with other local governments, and work on federal legislation and grants that might be of interest to Henderson.
'WARMING STATIONS'
Daytime shelters opened for homeless
Several "warming stations" have opened around the Las Vegas Valley to give the homeless a temporary respite from the daytime cold.
The five stations are scheduled to be open at least through today, and might remain open longer if necessary.
The locations and hours are:
• Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North near Owens Avenue, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Salvation Army, 33 W. Owens Ave. near Main Street, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St. near Flamingo Road, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Dula Gym, 441 E. Bonanza Road near Las Vegas Boulevard, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. near Basic Road in Henderson, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
