AMR seeks injunction to prevent strike

American Medical Response Inc. on Monday asked the National Labor Relations Board for an injunction to prevent a strike of the company's Las Vegas union employees.

Services Employee International Union 1107, which represents AMR paramedics and emergency medical technicians, plans to go on strike Nov. 28. AMR is the Las Vegas Valley's largest provider of ambulance services. The two sides have accused each other of unfair labor practices and made complaints to the NLRB.

"We remain confident that this issue will be resolved before Nov. 28, and the union will call off its plans for a strike," said John Wilson, AMR Las Vegas General Manager, in a news release.

41-year-old man found dead in apartment

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 41-year-old man who was found dead with facial injuries in an apartment Sunday, Las Vegas police said Monday.

Police found the man about 8:30 a.m. in an apartment at the 4700 block of Deckow Lane, near Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released Monday.

Police said the man attended a party Saturday at the apartment complex where he was involved in a confrontation and sustained the facial injuries.

Las Vegas hiker dies in fall at Lake Mead

National Park Service officials say a 35-year-old Las Vegas man has fallen to his death while hiking in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in northwestern Arizona.

The man was identified as Jay Brown Jr., said Andrew Muñoz, a spokesman for the National Park Service.

The victim was hiking with a group up Fortification Hill when he fell about 75 feet Sunday morning, Muñoz said. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was turned over to the Mohave County medical examiner, authorities said.

UNR to study recycling of spent nuclear fuel

The University of Nevada, Reno has received a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to study recycling spent nuclear fuel.

Officials with UNR's Center for Materials Research say part of the project will involve exposing spent fuels from commercial reactors to extreme high temperatures.

Researchers say the procedure removes toxic materials and allows uranium to be reused.

Scientists say the process could be an alternative to having to store nuclear waste for millions of years, such as at DOE's proposed Yucca Mountain repository 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Fallon pilot dies in Iraq in helicopter crash

Army Chief Warrant Officer Christian P. Humphreys of Fallon died Saturday when his OH-58 Kiowa helicopter crashed while on a mission over Mosul in Iraq.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced Monday that the 28-year-old Humphreys was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, Task Force 49, U.S. Army Alaska, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
