A Peach Springs, Ariz., man faces charges of first-degree murder, two counts of assault and one count of aggravated sexual abuse in connection with a homicide and a rape that happened Nov. 11 on the Hualapai Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona, federal authorities said.

Jonathon Bennie Yazzie Jr., 20, is accused of killing his cousin, Owen Walema Sr., 47, by striking him in the head with a wood-splitting maul, said Wyn Hornbuckle, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office for Arizona. According to Hornbuckle, the incident took place in the Peach Springs home of Yazzie's mother, about 50 miles northeast of Kingman.

"The indictment also alleges that following the murder, Yazzie went into the bedroom and sexually assaulted an adult female, 31," Hornbuckle said in a news release. Additional details or possible motives were not disclosed.

Yazzie, who is being held in federal detention in Flagstaff, will be transported to Phoenix for arraignment.

Joe Gillespie, 53, operations director of Mack Associates, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting.

Federal officials said they schemed to knowingly hire illegal workers and in some cases provided them with false identities.
