IN BRIEF

VICTIM NOT IDENTIFIED

Man arrested in fatal shooting in valley

One man is dead and a suspect is in custody following an early morning shooting Thursday at the 9700 block of Running Rabbit Street, Las Vegas police said.

When officers responded to the 2:47 a.m. call involving a shooting outside a residence near El Capitan Way and Iron Mountain Road, they found the unidentified victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. The man was taken to University Medical Center, where he died hours later.

Las Vegas police arrested 24-year-old Edward Jones in connection with the murder. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and booked on charges of murder with use of a deadly weapon.

The victim's name was not released by police Thursday.

Authorities believe the shooting might have been prompted by a neighborhood traffic dispute.

PAHRUMP INCIDENT

Driver fleeing police is killed in crash

A 24-year-old Las Vegas man died early Thursday after his pickup crashed in Pahrump while police say he was trying to elude them.

A Las Vegas police officer assisted a Nye County Sheriff's deputy who was following the 2006 Dodge Crew Cab pickup about 2:30 a.m. Las Vegas police said the man was driving erratically.

The driver then tried to flee, police said. Officers caught up with the truck as the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed in a desert area west of the Nye County Fairgrounds. The driver, who was not identified by police, was taken to Pahrump's Desert View Hospital, where he later died.

The collision remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol.

APPLICATIONS BEING TAKEN

Federal agencies prepare for fire season

The snow may be falling now, but federal agencies are gearing up for next year's fire season.

The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs are accepting applications for summer seasonal firefighting and dispatching positions.

A job fair is planned at the Elko BLM office on Jan. 7.

Officials say applications must be received no later than Jan. 20 to receive first consideration for most positions.

Officials say selected applicants for primary firefighter positions must pass the "pack test" after entering on duty. This test consists of a three-mile walk over flat terrain carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less.

HELD WITHOUT BAIL

Nevada man arrested at Canadian border

A Carson City man sought on allegations of having sex with a 14-year-old girl was arrested in Washington state by border agents as he attempted to re-enter the United States from Canada, authorities said.

Benedict Stefan LeVal, 26, was being held without bail in the Whatcom County Jail on a warrant for felony lewdness with a minor and statutory sexual seduction.

Authorities said LeVal was on a Greyhound bus and was arrested Saturday when agents checked his name and discovered the warrant.

LeVal, who was accompanied by his 3-year-old son, claimed to have been traveling in Canada for the past three months "but only had in his possession one small carry-on bag and $160 cash," according to a news release from the Blaine, Wash., office of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Detective Dena Lacy with the Carson City sheriff's office said the 14-year-old daughter of LeVal's friend alleged that LeVal had sex with her one night while her parents were out in November 2007.
