Man slain Christmas Day ID'd as valley man

The Clark County coroner's office identified John McCallum of Las Vegas as the man shot and killed early on Christmas Day in the 9700 block of Running Rabbit Street.

When Las Vegas police officers responded to the 2:47 a.m. call of a shooting outside a residence near El Capitan Way and Iron Mountain Road, they found McCallum, 50, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died hours later.

Police arrested 24-year-old Edward Jones in connection with the slaying. He was taken to the Clark County Detention Center and booked on charges of murder with use of a deadly weapon.

Authorities said the shooting might have been prompted by a neighborhood traffic dispute.

1996 SLAYING

New prosecutor to look at Ramsey case

A new prosecutor in Boulder, Colo., says he plans to take a fresh look at one of the country's most high-profile cold cases: the slaying a dozen years ago of JonBenet Ramsey.

Incoming Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett said he'll decide what to do with the investigation in his first 30 days on the job, which he starts Jan. 13. His predecessor, Mary Lacy, publicly exonerated the Ramsey family this year in the Dec. 26, 1996, slaying.

Garnett said he might send the case back to the police. The DA's office took over the investigation in 2002 because of criticism of the police department's handling of it.

JonBenet, a 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, was found bludgeoned and strangled in the basement of her parents' home.

OREGON INCIDENT

Father, son plead not guilty in bank bombing

A father and son accused of killing two Oregon law enforcement officers in a bank bombing pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that could lead to the death penalty if they are convicted.

Bruce Turnidge, 57, and his son, Joshua, 32, appeared in hearings Friday on multiple counts of aggravated murder. A grand jury indictment released Friday alleges that the bomb that exploded Dec. 12 was part of a bank-robbery attempt, but it does not state how the men are alleged to have intended to get the money.

Authorities had not previously specified a motive for the bombing in Woodburn, about 30 miles south of Portland.

The elder Turnidge has had financial problems including debt left from payments of thousands of dollars for various claims over the years. He had struggling businesses in Oregon and Nevada, where records show he had an excavating business and lived on a farm from the late 1990s to 2006, when he and his wife returned to Oregon.

The next hearing in the case is set for Jan. 6.
