Teen killed in crash, passenger flees scene

A 16-year-old boy was killed when he ran a red light at Eastern and Reno avenues early Thursday, police said.

The teen, identified as David Isac Escobar of Las Vegas, was driving a 1994 Toyota 4Runner west on Reno when he ran the red light at Eastern at 12:11 a.m.

The passenger's side of the 4Runner was struck by a 2000 Ford Ranger driven by 30-year-old Waylon Wilcox, who was driving south through the intersection on Eastern on a green light, Las Vegas police said.

Escobar wasn't wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle when it rolled, police said.

A passenger in the 4Runner fled the scene on foot when the vehicle came to rest. Police did not know if the passenger was injured.

Escobar was pronounced dead at the scene. Wilcox was not injured.

Victim in bluff collapse was Henderson man

A Nevada man who died this week when a bluff collapsed above him on a California beach has been identified as 57-year-old Robert Allen Mellone of Henderson, San Diego County officials said Thursday.

Mellone was at the Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, Calif., on Wednesday when a section of the cliff above him gave way and he was buried under rocks.

Mellone was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 2:20 p.m. He died of blunt force injury, the county medical examiner's office said.

One held, one at large in theft of copper wire

Las Vegas police have arrested one man and were looking for another in the theft of copper wire from light poles in the far southwest neighborhood of Mountain's Edge on Thursday morning.

Police received calls just before 3 a.m. that two people were stealing copper wire at Rainbow Boulevard and Starr Avenue. Police arrived and set up a perimeter in the neighborhood to search for the suspects.

One person was arrested and another was not found, police said. They refused to release the name of the person arrested, saying they believed the man was involved in other copper thefts.

Man killed in stabbing ID'd as 53-year-old

A man stabbed in the back multiple times and killed at the Sunrise Garden Apartments on Tuesday morning has been identified as 53-year-old Leo Lopez Chavez of Las Vegas.

Chavez's body was found about 9:45 a.m. at the apartments, at 3601 El Conlon Ave., near Valley View Boulevard and Sahara Avenue. He had been dead several hours, Las Vegas police said.

Officers cleared in Phoenix airport death

Prosecutors reviewing the death of a New York City woman while in police custody at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport last year said Thursday that they have cleared the officers involved of any criminal wrongdoing.

Carol Anne Gotbaum accidentally asphyxiated herself after being chained to a bench in a police holding room after her Sept. 28 arrest, authorities said.

Police said Gotbaum, 45, was intoxicated and unruly after missing her connecting flight while on the way to a substance-abuse rehabilitation clinic in Tucson, Ariz.
