Request for delay granted in Boggs trial
The trial of former Clark County Commissioner Lynette Boggs has been postponed until Jan. 26.
A District Court judge on Tuesday granted her attorney's request for a delay. The trial had been scheduled for July 28.
Boggs' lawyer, Gabriel Grasso, sought a postponement because he has several other trials taking place in the next few months.
One of those cases involves robbery charges against O.J. Simpson, who is scheduled to go to trial in September.
Boggs is accused of perjuring herself when she signed candidacy papers in 2006. Prosecutors say the forms clearly state candidates risk perjury charges if they willfully give false information.
Prosecutors say Boggs was living at a home on Dutch Valley Drive, which is outside her district, even though she claimed in campaign papers to be living at a different house within the district. County commissioners must live in the districts they represent.
Grasso said Boggs believed the house at Dutch Valley Drive eventually would be part of her district after rezoning.
ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING
Police: Teenager kills himself after incident
Elko police say a distraught teenager committed suicide after accidentally shooting another boy in the head with a handgun.
Investigators say the 15-year-old boy was visiting with family from Wisconsin and was at another's boy home across the street when the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
The youth had taken a 9 mm pistol from his father's vehicle and was either playing with it or showing it off in a bedroom when it fired, striking a 14-year-old boy in the head, police said.
Investigators said the parents of the younger boy were home, and as they rushed into the room, the other teen ran outside, where he shot himself in the head.
The 15-year-old died at the scene.
The younger boy was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday, police said.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Nader campaign to open valley office
The campaign of independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader plans to open a local office Saturday.
The public is invited to attend the opening at 5:30 p.m. at 2385 N. Decatur Blvd., near Smoke Ranch Road.
The office opening is being held in conjunction with grass-roots house meetings the campaign is holding nationwide. At 6 p.m., Nader is scheduled to address his supporters in a nationwide conference call to which the Las Vegas office will tune in.
The campaign's Nevada coordinator, Tony Booker, said the office space is being loaned by accountant and Democratic County Commission candidate Brent Howard and might be the shoestring campaign's only storefront office in the country.
Nader's campaign has successfully petitioned to be on Nevada's November election ballot.
NORTHERN NEVADA
Officials say disease killing doves, pigeons
Wildlife and health officials say doves and pigeons in the Reno-Sparks area are being affected by disease.
Experts say an investigation shows the birds are infected with an avian parasite called trichomoniasis.
It does not pose a threat to humans, but can infect raptors, caged birds, and domestic turkeys and chickens.
