FATAL ACCIDENT

Highway Patrol vet indicted on DUI charge

A grand jury this week indicted the Nevada Highway Patrol sergeant accused of driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident.

The grand jury indicted Edward Lattin on one charge of driving under the influence and causing a death. The indictment was released Wednesday.

Authorities accuse Lattin, a 22-year Highway Patrol veteran who supervised a team that investigates fatal crashes, of having marijuana in his system when he collided with another vehicle on June 11. Lattin was off duty at the time of the crash.

The collision killed 49-year-old Ying Warren.

BUSINESS BLAZE

Elderly man dies from burns, smoke injuries

An elderly man died of apparent burns and smoke inhalation earlier in the week after being caught in a late-night fire at a business on Owens Avenue, the Las Vegas Fire Department said Wednesday.

The man's identity was not released by the Clark County coroner's office. His exact age was unavailable.

Firefighters were called to the Ruby Duncan Manor at 500 W. Owens Avenue, near D Street, Tuesday at 10:27 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire was already out, and the man unconscious on the floor. He was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be sparked by a grease fire that spread to the man's clothes.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Man indicted on new charges in fatal crash

A man who had been accused of transporting illegal immigrants after a rollover crash killed nine people faces new charges that could bring the death penalty.

A federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted Brian Guzman Ochoa, 32, on four new counts Tuesday including transportation of illegal aliens resulting in death. The possible sentences on that charge are the death penalty or life in prison.

On Aug. 7, a sport utility vehicle heading north veered off a highway about 15 miles south of Florence, slammed into the far bank of a dry wash and flipped onto its roof. Nine people died at the scene.

A criminal complaint citing survivors identified Guzman as the driver.

He was among 10 people in the SUV hospitalized for injuries.
