New library opening on campus today
The University of Nevada, Reno's new $75.3 million library is set to open today.
The Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center will be twice the size of the 48-year-old Getchell Library. A future use for the old building has not been determined.
The five-story center will be among 30 libraries in the country with robotic automated book retrieval.
It also features "smart classrooms" with the latest computing and audio-visual systems, a digital projects lab and video conference rooms.
A grand opening is set for Aug. 28.
THIEVES SOUGHT
Copper stolen from Washoe County schools
Police were searching Sunday for thieves who have stolen tens of thousands of dollars worth of copper wiring at Washoe County schools.
The string of thefts that began July 31 targeted Van Gorder Elementary School, and North Valleys, Damonte Ranch and Spanish Springs high schools.
With the price of copper climbing to more than $3 a pound, authorities report an increase in the theft of copper wiring nationwide from power poles, construction sites and plumbing.
