HALF-MILLION DOLLARS BAIL
28-year-old charged in pet store robbery
Bail has been set at $500,000 for the Las Vegas woman accused of robbing a pet store, shooting at police officers and kidnapping a 70-year-old woman while leading authorities on a chase Sunday morning.
Mandy Hagen, 28, faces 13 charges including burglary, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon for her involvement in the Henderson heist.
About 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Henderson police were called to a PetSmart store near Sunset Road and Stephanie Street where a woman had held up employees with a handgun before fleeing in a white compact car.
Officers spotted Hagen near U.S. Highway 95 and Tropicana Avenue when she led them on a more than three-mile chase while waving and firing the handgun out the window, police said.
Hagen then stopped at a gas station where police say she took a 70-year-old woman hostage. Police said she grabbed the woman and waved the handgun at them before she was distracted and tackled.
Nobody was hurt in the 40-minute incident, according police.
Hagen, who was being held in Henderson Detention Center, refused comment Monday. She awaits a July 22 court hearing.
10 FEET FROM DOOR
Woman's body found after apartment fire
A 50-year-old Las Vegas woman was found dead in her southwest Las Vegas Valley apartment after a fire Sunday.
Clark County firefighters responded to a 3 p.m. call of smoke coming from the second floor of a Jovanna Villas apartment on Serene Avenue near Interstate 15.
Crews struggled through "a lot of debris" inside the apartment before finding the body of Rhonda Rae Stuckey, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison said.
Allison said firefighters had to climb over piles of stuff and through thick smoke to get to flames coming from a back bedroom.
Stuckey's body was found on the kitchen floor, about 10 feet from the door. Investigators are trying to determine whether she was conscious when the fire started.
Coroner's records indicated Stuckey died from inhaling smoke and soot and deemed the death accidental.
The Fire Department was still investigating the cause of the fire.
ARIZONA DEATH
Man's body floats 47 miles down river
The body of a man missing for five days in Bullhead City, Ariz., was recovered Saturday near the Blankenship Bend area of the Colorado River at the north mouth of Lake Havasu.
Bullhead City police spokeswoman Emily Montague said the man was Bradley Gene Keller, 47.
Keller's wife reported him missing July 8, the day after he failed to return from a planned outing on the Colorado River.
Montague said Keller's van and trailer were found at a marina. His Sea-Doo watercraft and life vest were recovered at the beach area near Rotary Park.
Keller's body floated 47 miles down the Colorado River before it was recovered, Montague said. Keller's death remains under investigation.
DEADLY DISPUTE
20-year-old who died in shooting identified
The Clark County coroner's office on Monday identified 20-year-old Joseph Masi as the man who died Saturday after being shot in the head during what police believe was a drug-related dispute.
Masi, of Las Vegas, died at University Medical Center. He was shot during an altercation that began about noon Friday near the Las Vegas Beltway and Flamingo Road.
Police said Masi was riding in a vehicle with Ronald Richards, 19, who was seen throwing a bag of marijuana into a trash bin before driving himself and Masi to St. Rose Dominican Hospital, San Martin campus. Both men were injured so severely that they were airlifted to UMC.
Las Vegas police recovered the marijuana and charged Richards with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell after he was treated and released from UMC on Saturday.
Police said Richards and Masi were trying to lose a white convertible on the Las Vegas Beltway. The driver of the convertible fired several shots at Richards' car.
LAS VEGAS MAN DIES
Motorcyclist who died last week identified
A Las Vegas man who died last week after losing control of his motorcycle was identified Monday as Walter Kanski by the Clark County coroner's office.
North Las Vegas police said Kanski, 49, was driving a 2005 Harley-Davidson west on Washburn Road near Camino Al Norte at a high rate of speed on Friday. He lost control, crossed into traffic and hit a curb and a fence. He wasn't wearing a helmet.
Police said Kanski was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
