FOUR NEVADA COUNTIES

Rural schools getting DOE surplus computers

The Department of Energy is donating 750 computers to school districts in rural Nevada and the Timbisha Shoshone tribe.

The computers are less than 5 years old and were purchased for $740,000 by the department, which intended to use the equipment for its endeavors in Nevada.

"We wish we could put computers in every classroom that needs one," said Allen Benson, spokesman for DOE's Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project. "It's part of DOE's mission to help educate future scientists and engineers."

Representatives from the tribe and school districts in Churchill, Lander, Mineral and White Pine counties selected the donated computers and monitors from 38 pallets stored at the DOE's Las Vegas warehouse.

An executive order requires U.S. agencies to give preference to schools and nonprofits when deciding upon surplus equipment.
