IN BRIEF
SECOND DEATH IN EIGHT DAYS
17-month-old girl drowns in family pool
A 17-month-old girl drowned Tuesday afternoon in the family pool, Las Vegas police said.
Medical personnel, who attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation, could not save the toddler, who lived at a home on East Boston and Gateway avenues. Police did not release the name of the adults who live at the home, in a neighborhood near Lamb Boulevard and St. Louis Avenue.
Las Vegas police Lt. Brian Evans said the investigation into the drowning was ongoing.
He wouldn't say whether it appeared the family had been negligent, nor would he specify how the infant ended up in the pool, other than to say that the child was playing outside. Evans said a family member was supervising the child but wouldn't provide more details.
The drowning marks the second such death in eight days.
On April 7, a 1-year-old girl drowned in her family pool in Henderson. Henderson police said the infant fell into the pool after she got into the backyard from a sliding door that had been left open.
NATALIE AVENUE INCIDENT
Children attacked by dogs: pit bull, boxer
A 4-year-old and a 5-year-old were hospitalized Tuesday after being attacked by two dogs.
The children were in the front yard of a house at 2768 Natalie Ave., near Vegas Valley Drive and McLeod Drive, according to a neighbor who declined to give his name.
The 5-year-old was bitten on the face and the other child was bitten on the leg about 2:30 p.m., according to Las Vegas police.
The children were taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center. Neither their names nor their conditions were provided.
The neighbor said he was in his house when he heard screams coming from across the street. When he went outside, he saw an employee of Southwest Gas holding down one of the dogs, described as a boxer. The neighbor then held down a pit bull, which he said was not combative.
Clark County Animal Control officials seized the dogs and were investigating the incident.
"We are looking at deeming the animals vicious," Animal Control Supervisor David March said.
