IN BRIEF

42-YEAR-OLD WOUNDED

Police seek man linked to shooting

Las Vegas police are searching for a man who was seen arguing with another man found by police with a gunshot wound in his head Wednesday at an apartment complex near Nellis and Lake Mead boulevards.

Police did not reveal the wounded 42-year-old man's identity. The victim was at University Medical Center Thursday and wasn't expected to live, Las Vegas police said.

They said the critically injured man was last seen arguing with Dennis Marc Grigsby, 38, at an apartment complex on the 2000 block of Nellis.

Grigsby is 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. He was last seen driving a white 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt with Nevada license plate 151 UMV. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Police believe he is armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information on the shooting or whereabouts of Grigsby should call Las Vegas police at 828-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

NO SEAT BELT

U.S. 93 accident kills California man

A 42-year-old California man who wasn't wearing a seat belt died Wednesday on U.S. Highway 93 after losing control of his Dodge Magnum and striking a dirt embankment, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The man, whose name wasn't released, was traveling south on the highway about 16 miles north of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway about 7:15 p.m. when he apparently lost control of the vehicle and drove over the western edge of the roadway.

The car then went airborne, crossed a ravine and hit the dirt embankment, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

MORTGAGE SCAM

Las Vegas police lieutenant indicted

A Clark County grand jury indicted a Las Vegas police lieutenant this week on theft and burglary charges in connection with a mortgage scam.

The grand jury indicted Juanita Goode, a 16-year veteran of the Police Department, on allegations that she falsified loan information to purchase a $600,000 home in Las Vegas.

Goode's attorney previously said she was pleading not guilty to the charges.

Authorities alleged that Goode claimed she worked a second job in order to qualify for a loan. She claimed falsely to be making $5,200 at a local business called Home Theatre Drapery & Design, an interior design company, authorities said. At the time, she was also making $7,800 a month as a police officer.

Goode is on paid administrative leave.

2005 SLAYING

19-year-old sentenced to 22 years in prison

A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to killing a man during a 2005 robbery was sentenced Thursday to 22 years to life in prison.

Michael Lavelle Scott Jr., who has been in jail for at least three years, was sentenced for killing 32-year-old Raul Melgarejo and for robbery with a deadly weapon.

"I apologize to everyone I affected," Scott said in District Court before he was sentenced.

Scott, who was 16 at the time of the killing, earlier agreed to testify against another suspect, Donald Thomas, who was indicted for slaying Melgarejo in 2005, according to court documents. However, Scott later rescinded his agreement, authorities said.

Thomas was found guilty of robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and other charges in March, but authorities dropped the murder charge against him, court documents state.

FIRST-DEGREE MURDER

Third person convicted in slaying sentenced

A third defendant convicted in the 2005 robbery-related slaying of a Kingman, Ariz., teenager was sentenced Thursday.

David Srout, 31, of Golden Valley will serve 25 years to life in prison for first-degree murder, followed by six years more in prison for hindering prosecution.

A jury determined Srout participated in the August 2005 murder of Christopher Marcus, 18, and that he helped bury the victim, whose body has never been found.

Testimony during a trial and two change of plea hearings indicated the murder occurred as Marcus was robbed of roughly $6,000 he was paid in an automobile accident insurance settlement.

Two co-defendants are already serving prison terms.

The final defendant, Mike Withers, 31, of Kingman, faces up to 18 years in prison when sentenced next month after pleading guilty Monday to second-degree murder.

JUDICIAL DISCIPLINE

Hearing for judge rescheduled for June

The Nevada Judicial Discipline Commission hearing for embattled District Judge Elizabeth Halverson, which was scheduled to begin on April 14, will now be held on June 9.

Halverson waived her right to have the hearing in April, and the commission didn't oppose it.

The Judicial Discipline Commission filed a formal complaint against Halverson alleging she mistreated staff, slept through trials and couldn't adequately conduct trials. It also alleged that she interfered with the administration of the courts.

The scheduled five-day hearings will go over the merits of the case.

Halverson, who has denied the charges, has been suspended with pay since July.
