NORTHERN NEVADA CHASE
Man gets 16-year term in multiple carjackings
A man accused of carjacking three separate vehicles at gunpoint while leading police on a wild chase across Northern Nevada in June has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Elko District Judge Andrew Puccinelli handed down the sentence to 22-year-old Anthony Fairbanks of Silver Springs, who will be eligible for parole after 64 months.
Authorities said the chase began in Eureka County after a traffic stop and continued with Fairbanks carjacking three vehicles in the Elko area. He made his way back to Lyon County, where he was arrested after a four-hour standoff in Fernley.
The chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph on Interstate 80, authorities said.
In February, Fairbanks pleaded guilty to robbery with use of a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
He also was ordered to pay $1,675 in fees, fines and restitution.
DOUBLE SLAYING
LV man might face death penalty in case
Prosecutors in Spokane, Wash., have added aggravating circumstances to murder charges against a 20-year-old man accused of killing two people, then setting fire to their home, making the death penalty a possibility in the case.
Spokane County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jack Driscoll said Friday he has 30 days to decide whether to seek the death penalty against Justin Crenshaw of Las Vegas. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of a young couple on Feb. 28.
On Wednesday, the county formally filed murder charges with aggravating circumstances against Crenshaw, making him eligible for the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.
Committing, or attempting to commit more than one murder at the same time, can become a capital crime under Washington's death penalty law.
Crenshaw was arrested March 1 after the bodies of Tanner Pehl, 20, and 18-year-old Sarah Clark were found inside Pehl's north Spokane home Feb. 28.
Investigators said Crenshaw had recently moved to Spokane from Las Vegas and had been seeing Clark for a short time.
CALLER SAID HE WAS LOST
Body of missing hiker found by search team
The body of a hiker missing for three months in the San Bernardino Mountains was found Friday, authorities said.
The body of Dean Christy, 62, was discovered by a search-and-rescue team on patrol in the area near Green Valley Lake, Calif., where Christy was reported lost on Jan. 4.
Coroner's investigators identified the body as that of Christy.
Christy called a sheriff's station on Jan. 4 to report he was lost in fog at an elevation of about 7,000 feet.
He was wearing a down jacket, gloves and hiking boots, but had no food or water.
