FACES 20 TO 50 YEARS

Man pleads guilty in killing, burglary case

A 41-year-old man accused of killing a man he believed was having an affair with his estranged wife pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count each of murder and burglary.

Mario Lino, who was once represented by personal-injury lawyer Glen Lerner, pleaded guilty to killing Mark Haberman, 48. He stands to receive 20 to 50 years in prison when sentenced.

Authorities say Lino shot Haberman multiple times on April 23, 2007, at Haberman's house near Decatur and Lake Mead boulevards.

Lino's wife, the operator of a pool maintenance company, was at Haberman's house at the time of the killing installing a pump on Haberman's pool.

Lerner, widely known for his local television commercials, represented Lino until he missed the first day of Lino's murder trial in January. At the time, Lerner said he was out of town on a sabbatical. District Judge Michelle Leavitt later fined Lerner more than $2,500 and ordered him to pay Lino's attorney's fees.

New hospital chief's contract approved

Kathy Silver will receive $250,000 yearly as chief executive of University Medical Center in a contract approved Tuesday by the Clark County Commission.

Lacy Thomas, her predecessor, was paid the same salary before he was fired in January 2007 amid the hospital's swelling debt and an investigation into possible cronyism.

Silver, 60, ran the hospital as interim director for 15 months and was named to the top post permanently in April.

A 19-year-old woman who died when she lost control of her motorcycle late Sunday has been identified as Candice J. Rubalcaba of Henderson.

Rubalcaba was driving west on the Las Vegas Beltway near the airport connector tunnel when her Kawasaki motorcycle careened down an embankment on the right side of the road about 11:45 p.m., according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Ex-Pahrump teacher sentenced to prison

A former fifth-grade teacher in Pahrump has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison for receiving child pornography over the Internet.

Michael Gogerty, 41, pleaded guilty to the charges in February. Until his arrest last year, Gogerty was employed at Hafen Elementary School in the Nye County School District.

Authorities say they opened the investigation into Gogerty after getting a tip from police in Toronto, Canada. A search of his Las Vegas home turned up more than 60,000 images containing child pornography, authorities said.
