NATIONWIDE DRIVE
Postal carriers to pick up nonperishable food
Clark County residents are being asked to leave nonperishable food beside their mailboxes Saturday morning in order to contribute to what's being dubbed the largest one-day food drive in the world.
The National Association of Letter Carriers, the union that represents U.S. Postal Service mail carriers, is holding its 18th annual national food drive.
Charles Desiderio, a spokesman for the local Salvation Army, said every post office in the United States will participate.
Desiderio said letter carriers will pick up the food and deliver it to their post offices. Each post office is working with a different charity group to which it will give the food.
He said people still can deliver food to their post offices Saturday evening if they forget to leave food for the letter carriers in the morning.

DRIVER HAD MEDICAL PROBLEM
Landscaper working in median struck, killed
A 23-year-old landscaper was struck and killed by a pickup Wednesday when the driver suffered a medical episode, Las Vegas police said.
Police said the incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. near Town Center and Alta drives.
They did not release the dead man's identity.
Police said Las Vegas resident Timothy Slick, 42, was driving a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup north on Town Center when he suffered a medical episode. The pickup moved into the center median and hit the landscaper, police said.
Slick and the landscaper were taken to the University Medical Center. The landscaper was pronounced dead a few hours later, police said. Slick suffered minor injuries.
No charges were filed against Slick pending an investigation.

DENVER COURTROOM
Inmate jumps through third-floor window
An inmate in handcuffs and shackles jumped through a closed window in a third-floor courtroom in Denver, shattering the glass, plunging to the ground and seriously injuring himself, police said.
The man, in court on a misdemeanor assault charge, had been told to go before the judge at the Denver City and County Building, a witness said.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the man's goal was escape or suicide, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
