DUST-FILLED AIR
California winds cause poor visibility in valley
If you had problems seeing the mountains around the valley clearly on Sunday, blame inclement weather in the Golden State.
Strong winds this weekend in San Bernardino County, Calif., caused dust to fly into Southern Nevada from the western Mojave Desert, said John Adair, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Las Vegas.
The dust hindered visibility in Clark County, Adair said. He added that weekend winds in San Bernardino reached 50 mph.
"Winds have lifted dust off the dry lake beds," Adair said. "It's been carrying the dust into Southern Nevada."
FIRE FATALITY
House fire claims life of 56-year-old man
A 56-year-old man died Sunday night in a house fire that appeared to be accidental, Las Vegas fire officials said.
Several people were visiting the home at 1961 Walker St., near H Street and Lake Mead Boulevard, when the blaze started in a rear bedroom, a Las Vegas Fire Department statement said. Firefighters, who were called at 7:50 p.m., encountered heavy flames and smoke and were told by those who fled that someone was still in the house.
The firefighters found on the floor a man with severe burns, and he was taken to University Medical Center, where he died about an hour later, the department said.
