LV woman dies from accident injuries

An 89-year-old Las Vegas woman died Monday from injuries sustained in a May 3 car crash on Harmon Avenue near Koval Lane, police said.

Margret Dienes was pronounced dead at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

At 6:05 p.m. May 3, Dienes was a passenger in a 2005 Buick Le Sabre driven by 90-year-old George Dienes. The Buick was heading north from a private drive when it traveled into the path of a 2005 Lincoln Town Car that was traveling east on Harmon and driven by 42-year-old John Simon. The Lincoln hit the right side of the Buick.

Simon and George Dienes both suffered moderate injuries in the crash.

Failing to yield the right-of-way from a private drive probably was the cause of the collision, police said, but the accident remains under investigation.

A 34-year-old Las Vegas man died early Saturday after crashing his sport utility vehicle into a light pole on Lake Mead Parkway near Boulder Highway in Henderson.

The man, whose identity was not released, was driving east on Lake Mead in a Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 2:10 a.m. when he crashed into a light pole in the median, Henderson police said.

The Jeep then struck several trees and boulders in the median before overturning and sliding across the westbound lanes of Lake Mead and coming to a stop on the shoulder of the road.

A man who died in a Friday night traffic accident on Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Eastern Avenue was identified as 23-year-old Jared Millard.

Millard was in the passenger seat of a 2003 Dodge Neon driven by 20-year-old Jaban Aguayo.

As the Neon was making a left turn from Silverado Ranch into a Target shopping center at 10:58 p.m., the vehicle pulled into the path of an eastbound 1997 GMC Sierra 3500 pickup on Silverado Ranch, according to Las Vegas police.

The truck, driven by 21-year-old Randy Bartolone, swerved but was unable to avoid the Neon. The front of the truck hit the passenger side of the car.

Millard was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus. Aguayo suffered moderate injuries. Bartolone was not injured.

Failing to yield the right of way to the pickup was the cause of the accident, police said.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Governor appoints head of state agency

Mike Skaggs, who has made a career of expanding business activity in Southwest states, was named Monday as executive director of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development.

Gov. Jim Gibbons named Skaggs after a search launched after Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, who oversees the state's economic development efforts, asked Tim Rubald to step down from the post in mid-November.

In his new job paying just over $100,000 yearly, Skaggs will oversee a staff of about 30 employees and manage a nearly $13 million, two-year budget.

Skaggs most recently was an executive with DW Turner Public Relations and Advertising, and previously ran Next Generation Economy Inc., both in Albuquerque, N.M.

He also was an executive with Albuquerque Economic Development and the Economic Development Group in Phoenix.

Gibbons also named Luis Valera of Henderson and Miranda Du of Reno to the economic development commission.
