IN BRIEF
NORTHERN NEVADA CRASH
Couple dies in accident near their hometown
An investigation continued Saturday into a collision that killed a Gardnerville couple on U.S. Highway 395 about 10 miles south of their hometown.
Officials with the Nevada Highway Patrol said the victims, Norman White, 73, and his wife, Virginia, 70, were in a classic 1955 Pontiac sedan that collided late Friday afternoon with a pickup.
Troopers said Norman White might have applied the brakes and swerved to the left for some reason, causing his car to travel sideways into the path of the oncoming pickup.
The pickup driver, Hector Trigueros, 40, of Topaz, Calif., was flown to a Reno hospital, where he was released after treatment.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Snow in Sierra Nevada causes traffic tie-ups
Snow prompted motorists to put chains on their vehicles Saturday on some Sierra Nevada highways.
And officials with the California Highway Patrol said snow was to blame for a string of minor accidents Saturday morning on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit.
National Weather Service forecaster Ray Collins of Reno says the snow has generally been light.
He said snow over the Memorial Day weekend is not all that unusual.
The weather service is calling for a chance of snow at higher elevations around Lake Tahoe through Monday.
CALIFORNIA CASE
Woman arrested after leaving infant in SUV
A 21-year-old Sonora, Calif., woman admits she made a mistake when she left her infant son in her sport utility vehicle while she had her hair colored, but she says sheriff's deputies overreacted when they arrested her.
Sara Kelley says she left her 8-month-old son, David, in the vehicle on Monday because he was asleep. Someone saw the child and called sheriff's deputies, who arrested Kelley on suspicion of child endangerment.
Kelley was freed after posting $25,000 bail. She will be arraigned Wednesday.
Stylist Morgan Minners says Kelley's vehicle was parked in front of the salon, about 20 feet from her chair.
