NORTHEAST VALLEY
Two youths arrested on vandalism charges
Las Vegas police this week arrested two boys on allegations that they defaced Diaz Elementary School and caused about $50,000 in vandalism to private and public property in the northeast valley.
Police Capt. Christopher Darcy with the Northeast Area Command said the boys, 12 and 14, were arrested Tuesday for graffiti vandalism to Diaz, which is under construction at 4450 E. Owens Ave., and about $40,000 in damage to the area April 8.
During the investigation into the tagging, Darcy said the boys admitted to vandalizing the area for the past two years. The damage to the property outside the school was estimated at another $10,000, he said.
The boys will be charged with several misdemeanor and one felony count of placing graffiti, police said.
Darcy said residents in the northeast valley have told police that graffiti is a big problem in that section of town.
Darcy said police arrest hundreds of graffiti vandals per year for defacing property.
BALLOT MEASURE
Washoe panel backs plan for school repairs
An advisory panel is recommending a ballot measure to raise vehicle registration fees and sales taxes to raise money for Washoe County school repairs and technology.
The 15-member committee was created by the Legislature last year to search for solutions for school upkeep.
Officials say the measures would allow the sale of $393 million in bonds to finance the projects.
The committee said a quarter-cent sales tax increase would generate about $18 million a year. Increased vehicle registration fees would add another $5.5 million.
The Nevada Legislative Counsel Bureau will write the question for the Nov. 4 ballot.
ABANDONED AUTOMOBILE
Body found in trunk of car in Kyle Canyon
A dead body was found in the trunk of an abandoned car Thursday afternoon in Kyle Canyon, Las Vegas police said.
The cause of death was unknown late Thursday, said Lt. Christopher Hoye of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Hoye said officers found an abandoned car on private property about 2 p.m. Officers noticed a strong odor. Hoye said the car's trunk was slightly open and, when officers open the trunk fully, they discovered the body covered with some kind of tarp.
Police said the homicide section was investigating the death but didn't have any suspects.
"The nature of his death is unknown," Hoye said. "How long he was there is also unknown."
