Texas refueling stop leads to pilot's arrest

A pilot tailed by airborne federal agents and arrested during a refueling stop in Jacksonville, Texas, was jailed Friday on a nearly $2 million bond in a drug investigation.

Rodney K. Dotson of the Nevada city of Stateline was arraigned on one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of marijuana.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Detective Chris White said bond is $975,000 on each third-degree felony count. If convicted, Dotson faces two to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000 on each count.

The single-engine plane flown by Dotson was confiscated, along with its cargo of 31 pounds of "high-level" marijuana, he said.

Dotson told officers he was on his way to Baton Rouge, La., where he has a residence, White said.

Federal charges are pending, White said.

Attorney Michael Kesler of Jacksonville, identified by White as Dotson's lawyer, could not be reached for comment.

Police in Sacramento, Calif., say a 76-year-old man operating an unlicensed chiropractic clinic out of his garage is suspected of killing one of his patients with a neck manipulation.

Antonio Arellano was booked into the Sacramento County jail Friday on suspicion of murder.

Police Sgt. Matt Young said 64-year-old Jose Lopez sought help from Arellano for pain in his extremities Tuesday. Arellano adjusted the victim's neck, seriously injuring Lopez and leaving him unconscious.

He was placed on life support but was declared dead two days later.

Arellano's only training was a massage class he took in the 1940s, but Young said Arellano had a following and handed out business cards in his neighborhood.

SAINT BERNARD UNHARMED

Black bear loses tussle with dog on leash

A black bear wandering through a yard Friday afternoon in the Yukon River village of Galena, Alaska, decided to square off with a Saint Bernard tethered to a run line.

Police Chief John Millan said the dog tore up the bear and never got a scratch itself.

He said the homeowner grabbed a rifle but didn't fire because he was afraid of shooting the dog. The bear broke loose minutes later and took off into the woods.

Later, the bear could not be found.
