STEPPED INTO VEHICLE'S PATH
Man dies two weeks after being hit by car
A 39-year-old man died Thursday from injuries sustained during a May 13 accident on Durango Drive near Mountains Edge Parkway.
Aron Hernandez of Las Vegas was exiting a 1998 Ford Mustang when he was hit by another car at 10:05 p.m., Las Vegas police said. He was taken to the University Medical Center, where he died at 8:05 a.m. Thursday.
The day of the accident, the Mustang had been traveling south on Durango, north of Mountains Edge. Hernandez, a passenger, and the driver of the car, 28-year-old Samantha Meyer, were arguing.
The Mustang stopped suddenly and Hernandez got out of the car, according to police. A 1994 Honda Civic driven by 19-year-old Stephanie Carrillo was traveling a short distance behind the Mustang and was unable to stop.
The Honda swerved to the right, hitting the Mustang and Hernandez.
Carrillo suffered minor injuries. Meyer was not injured.
GUN CONFISCATION DROPS
LV police to continue patrolling schools
Las Vegas police will continue stepped-up patrols around valley middle schools and high schools, citing a marked decrease in guns confiscated by police since the patrols were introduced.
Only 15 guns have been confiscated, down from 56 guns in the previous school year, Clark County School District police Lt. Ken Young said Thursday.
Las Vegas police began dispatching two officers to patrol by every middle school and high school in late January in response to increasing violence near schools.
They'll continue to do so over the summer and into the next school year, they said.
School violence peaked in February, when Palo Verde High School freshman Christopher Privett was shot and killed while walking home from school.
ACCUSED IN DEADLY CRASH
Preacher's trial opens in rancher's death
Opening statements are under way in Modesto, Calif., in the trial of a preacher accused of causing a car crash that killed an elderly rancher to cover up the fact that he was stealing from him.
Fifty-seven-year-old Howard Porter is charged with murder in Stanislaus County Superior Court for the death of 85-year-old Frank Craig in April 2004.
Porter's attorneys say the pastor was a man of good character who sought to help the rancher, but that he happened to be a bad driver.
Prosecutors say it's not a coincidence that the two had a similar crash two years earlier that crippled Craig.
Porter faces a life sentence in prison without possibility of parole if convicted.
He's also charged with attempted murder, theft or embezzlement from an elder adult by a caretaker and elder abuse causing death.
BOYFRIEND ARRESTED
Woman's body kept on dry ice after overdose
A coroner's official says a woman whose body was found packed on dry ice in a plastic container in a hotel in Newport Beach, Calif., died of a drug overdose.
Supervising deputy coroner Larry Esslinger said Monique Trepp died of a lethal cocktail of cocaine and alcohol.
Trepp's frozen body was discovered in March in a small plastic box in the hotel room of her boyfriend when police raided the room in search of drugs.
Boyfriend Stephen David Royds later told police that he found Trepp dead a year before and kept her body on dry ice because there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest and he didn't want to call authorities.
Royds has pleaded not guilty to felony narcotics charges and is in custody awaiting trial.
