83-year-old loses two sons in house blaze

Before a fire ravaged her East Oakland, Calif., home, Carrie Taylor already had lost three children. She lost her two remaining sons in the blaze Tuesday morning.

Authorities said most occupants of the house managed to escape, but Freddy Taylor ran back in to help his developmentally disabled brother, Henry Taylor Jr. The men were found dead in the rear of the building, with Freddy lying on top of his brother in an attempt to shield him from the smoke and flames, fire officials said.

Investigators said the cause appeared to be accidental, possibly from an overloaded extension cord.

Carrie Taylor, 83, has lost three other children: James Taylor died of a heart attack in 2001, Note Taylor died of cancer the same year and Priscilla Taylor was stabbed to death by a boyfriend in 1977, according to relatives and police.

SUNDAY MORNING INCIDENT

Police officers involved in shooting identified

Las Vegas police identified the officers who shot and killed a man Sunday morning as Christopher Dennis and Michael Loeffler.

The officers confronted Daechull Chung, after a resident in the 1500 block of Living Desert Drive called police saying Chung was knocking on his door, asking for a woman who did not live at the residence.

A first officer arrived and saw Chung at the door. According to police, Chung then ran at the officer with two kitchen knives, one in each hand. Then, a second officer arrived.

Police said Chung was ordered to drop the knives, and when he failed to do so, the first officer fired one shot at him. The bullet hit Chung, who fell to the ground, dropping one of the knives.

Police said Chung then stood up, still holding the second knife. When he refused to drop this knife, the second officer fired two shots, hitting Chung twice.

Dennis, 27, has been with the Metropolitan Police Department since January 2007, and Loeffler, 43, since April 2006.
