Girl Scouts selling cookies in Kingman, Ariz., watched their troop leader get pummeled Saturday by a man at a local truck stop.

Police Sgt. Rusty Cooper said the woman confronted David Paul Stade, 47, when the Golden Valley man was acting suspicious and following the Girl Scouts.

"Stade is alleged to have shoved the troop leader and began hitting her several times in the face, Cooper said. "The 27-year-old troop leader suffered a cut to her eye, a chipped tooth and a bloody lip."

Cooper said Stade also tried to steal the woman's fanny pack, which contained money from the cookie sales, when citizens intervened and restrained Stade for police. He said Stade also kicked an arresting officer as he was taken into custody.

A motorcycle theft suspect fleeing police was killed early Monday when he slammed into a church in Carson City.

Sheriff's deputies pursuing the man, who wasn't carrying any ID, said the motorcycle hit speeds of at least 100 mph before hitting a curb and crashing into the building.

Investigators later determined that a new motorcycle had been stolen from a local business. The owner of the shop said the motorcycle required some assembly after being removed from a shipping crate, and that would have taken at least an hour.

There was no official comment Monday about whether Gov. Jim Gibbons and first lady Dawn Gibbons met with family in Carson City over the weekend to discuss whether their marriage of more than 21 years would continue or end in divorce.

Longtime Gibbons adviser Jim Denton said only that the Gibbonses "continue to be very active in their respective public schedules," and that he didn't have further comments beyond his confirmation Thursday that the couple was going through a personal "painful time."

The first-term Republican governor didn't release any statement through his press office about the reported family meeting, and Dawn Gibbons couldn't be reached for comment Monday.

CHILD PORN CHARGES

Brothel owner protests seizure of computer

A Nevada brothel owner facing federal child pornography charges in Cheyenne, Wyo., argued that Wyoming police violated his constitutional rights when they seized a computer and two hard drives during a traffic stop last summer.

David Burgess, 55, asked a federal district court judge on Monday to suppress evidence taken from the equipment.

Authorities found images on the computer equipment that led to charges of possessing and transporting child pornography.

Burgess is the owner of the Old Bridge Ranch, a legal brothel east of Reno.

He also is a leader of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang in Nevada.

He has pleaded not guilty.

U.S. Judge Alan B. Johnson didn't rule on the motion Monday.
