IN BRIEF
TOY GREGORY
Judge has heart attack, in critical condition
Municipal Judge Toy Gregory suffered a heart attack last week and is in the hospital in critical condition, a municipal court administrator said Wednesday evening.
Gregory's family didn't want to disclose at which hospital the 74-year-old judge was staying, said James Carmany, a court administrator.
He said Gregory suffered the heart attack Friday evening.
"He did have a heart attack, and he is in the hospital," Carmany said.
Gregory, a Las Vegas resident since 1946, was appointed to Las Vegas Municipal Court in 1983. He has been re-elected ever since.
Before becoming a judge, he practiced law with his father under the firm name of Gregory and Gregory.
'FINE-TUNING' BY GIBBONS
Responsibilities shift on governor's staff
Gov. Jim Gibbons has modified the job duties of his three top aides in a move to make state government operate "more like a business."
Deputy Chief of Staff Dianne Cornwall said Wednesday she became chief operating officer for the Gibbons administration on New Year's Day. In the position, she oversees all state agencies.
Both Chief of Staff Mike Dayton and legal counsel Josh Hicks formerly oversaw operations of some state agencies.
Under the change, Dayton will concentrate solely on policy matters while Hicks will handle only legal matters.
"We are trying to be more efficient," said Cornwall, a former Washoe County commissioner. "After a year in office, we are fine-tuning how we do things. It is how you run a business."
Cornwall added that she did not receive an increase in pay with the new job title and will continue to report to Dayton, who is based in Southern Nevada.
"Nobody gained and nobody lost with the changes," she said. "It wasn't political."
KNIGHTS INN ON PARADISE ROAD
Man found dead at hotel identified
A man who was found dead by Las Vegas police at the Knights Inn hotel over the weekend from an apparent homicide was identified Wednesday as Reginald Allen Gomes of Las Vegas.
Gomes, 46, was found by police when they responded to a report about 2:40 p.m. Saturday at the hotel at 5100 S. Paradise Road, near Tropicana Avenue.
There, police found the man dead on the floor of a room.
Police learned that Gomes had checked into the hotel Friday under an assumed name.
DRIVER OF CAR SOUGHT
Bicyclist killed in parking lot identified
A bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car in a parking lot at 4311 Boulder Highway on Sunday has been identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Steven L. Olsen, 51, of Las Vegas.
Olsen was riding his bicycle east through the parking lot of the Town & Country Manor hotel, where he lived, about 10:39 p.m. when witnesses say a small white car traveling at a high rate of speed hit him, Las Vegas police Detective Corey Moon said. The driver of the car fled the scene.
Police still were looking for the driver of the car Wednesday. The vehicle probably sustained damage to its front end, hood and windshield, Moon said.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Moon at 828-3538.
