GASOLINE STATION ROBBERY

Department identifies officer in shooting

The Las Vegas police officer who shot a robbery suspect last week was Ion Illiescu.

Illiescu, 24, has been with the department for one year, police said.

He wounded 39-year-old Duane Alexander Young on Thursday morning behind a shopping center at Rainbow Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Illiescu was responding to a 6:15 a.m. robbery call at a nearby Rebel gasoline station when he saw Young running from the store, police said. Young ran behind the shopping center and tried to carjack a man but was stopped by Illiescu's Taser, police said.

Police said that Young told the officer he would kill him and that when he reached into his clothes, as if he were pulling a gun, Illiescu fired one shot.

Young was taken to University Medical Center for treatment. He was charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary and attempted robbery.

SEPARATE CRASHES

Victims in fatal wrecks on interstate identified

Two men killed in separate wrecks Sunday morning on Interstate 15 were identified as Arturo Alatorre-De Robles and Shinko Kise.

Alatorre-De Robles, 27, of Las Vegas died after being thrown from his Nissan pickup about 3:30 a.m. three miles south of Sloan, the Nevada Highway Patrol said. His northbound truck drifted into another lane and hit the back of another pickup before striking the median divider.

Alatorre-De Robles was not wearing a seat belt.

The second crash happened four hours later when a Ford SVT Focus hit a Honda sedan that had slowed for a traffic jam from the first crash.

The Ford pushed the Honda into the back to a Nevada Department of Transportation truck. Kise, the Honda's driver, died at the scene. His female passenger was airlifted to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

After the collision, the Ford sped away. Troopers caught up to it five miles later and arrested the driver. His name was not available.

Police spokesman Keith Paul said Shively was not wearing a helmet.

ACCIDENT AT HOME

Boy wounded as he, brother play with rifle

Authorities in Reno said a 3-year-old boy was shot and wounded by his 5-year-old brother as the two were playing with a small-caliber rifle.

The Washoe County sheriff's office said the children's mother thought the weapon was a BB gun.

The accident happened about 7:15 a.m. Monday at a home on Foothill Road.

Authorities said the bullet went through the younger boy's shoulder.

The child was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center. Paramedics described his condition as critical.

DEVELOPER'S APPLICATION

County staff urging rejection of prison

Staff members of a northwestern Arizona county are recommending denial for a developer's application to build a second prison.

Mohave County staff is citing incompatibility with the surrounding residential area. They also said the prison could hurt commercial development in the area where it would be built.

The Mardian Family of Gateway Lots LLC of Las Vegas wants to build the prison in phases, with the first phase able to house 1,500 to 2,000 inmates.

The application did not indicate what company would operate the prison or what level of offender it would house.

Mardian's application said the prison would provide a significant economic benefit to the area, including a new tax base and about 300 new jobs after completion of the first phase.
