IN BRIEF
BANK ROBBERY
Officer who shot, killed suspect is identified
The officer who shot and killed a bank robbery suspect Wednesday evening has been identified as an eight-year-veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Officer Robert R. Williams, 34, fired five shots at Angel Jesus Hinojoza, 27, after he brandished a gun at the officer, police said. Hinojoza was struck four times.
Williams works as a patrol officer for the Downtown Area Command.
Police confronted Hinojoza in the 400 block of 15th Street, near Mesquite Avenue, because he was in a vehicle that matched the description of the getaway car used in a bank robbery on Flamingo Road.
Hinojoza fled from the car on foot before brandishing a handgun at Williams, police said.
Hinojoza was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they recovered from the getaway vehicle the money taken in the bank robbery and clothing items worn during the robbery.
ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE
Cats rescued from shelter up for adoption
An animal welfare group hopes to find homes today for at least 75 cats rescued last month from a poorly managed Pahrump cat shelter.
The Best Friends Animal Society of Kanab, Utah, stepped in to take care of the more than 600 cats that were surrendered to Nye County Animal Control. About 100 of those will be available for adoption from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Summerlin PetSmart, 9775 W. Charleston Blvd.
"They have been through so much," said Nikki Sharp, campaigns manager for Best Friends Animal Society. "It's time for them to be spoiled with love and attention."

A tip from an employee of For the Love of Cats and Kittens, or FLOCK, led county officials to visit the Pahrump facility, where they found hundreds of sick and starving cats. The former head of FLOCK was arrested on 125 counts of animal cruelty.
