7-ELEVEN PARKING LOT

Woman found shot to death in vehicle

A woman who had been shot to death was found Thursday night inside a vehicle in a convenience store parking lot at Rainbow Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Witnesses at the 7-Eleven told Las Vegas police that they saw a man and woman in a green Honda. The witnesses then heard gunshots and saw the man exit the Honda and leave in a silver car, Lt. Steve Herpolsheimer said.

The witnesses called police after approaching the Honda and seeing the woman slumped over in the driver's seat, Herpolsheimer said. 2005 DEATH

Woman gets 25 years in prison in slaying

A Golden Valley, Ariz., woman who shot and killed a man during the burglary of his home in September 2005 was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison.

Christina Cornwell, 50, pleaded guilty to theft and second-degree murder in the death of Alex Lackey, 74.

Cornwell and co-defendant Matthew Beem, 31, of Kingman boxed up Lackey's body in his own vehicle, which was driven to Laughlin and left in a casino parking lot. Beem is serving a 16-year prison term for his role in the case.

ICY CONDITIONS

Closures announced at canyon's North Rim

Scenic roads and overlooks at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon have been closed for the winter season.

The closures follow the first snowfall of the season last weekend, which left about a foot of snow on the ground. Much of the snow has melted, but icy conditions on the Point Imperial and Cape Royal roads and their canyon overlooks make conditions too dangerous to leave the routes open.

Grand Canyon National Park officials said Wednesday that areas of the North Rim accessible by way of State Route 67 will remain open until more snow forces the seasonal closure of that road.

The more popular South Rim of the canyon remains open year-round.

RESIDENTS ESCAPE

Two-story townhome destroyed by fire

Five people escaped a fire that gutted their northwest valley townhome Tuesday night, officials with the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the two-story townhouse at 2213 Short Pine Drive, near the intersection of Smoke Ranch Road and Torrey Pines Drive, about 9:30 p.m.

Fire officials said they believe the fire was accidental and might have been caused by careless cigarette smoking.

The damage was estimated at $175,000.

Gary Collins was sentenced Thursday to four days in jail in a drunken driving case stemming from an October crash that police blamed on an 89-year-old motorist.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner Rebecca Omens instructed the TV host and actor to surrender by Jan. 10 to start serving his sentence.

She also ordered Collins, 69, to serve four years' probation upon his release, pay a $500 fine, perform 100 hours of community service, enroll in an 18-month alcohol education program and attend 26 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
