Woman's death leads to lengthy sentence
A 21-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to decades in prison for killing a Las Vegas woman.
District Judge Jackie Glass on Tuesday sentenced Demarene Coleman to 20 to 50 years for first-degree murder, which Coleman is to serve concurrently with a four- to 10-year sentence for battery with a deadly weapon, Coleman's defense attorney Carmine Colucci said.
The sentence was previously agreed upon by Colucci and prosecutors. Coleman pleaded guilty to the charges in June.
He acknowledged killing 41-year-old Tanzie Austin and injuring two other women in the same shooting July 10, 2005, on Mesquite Avenue, near Eastern Avenue and U.S. Highway 95.
According to the police report, Coleman's girlfriend had been in a fight with Austin's friends earlier that evening.
