HANDGUN ON CAMPUS
Boy, 16, arrested at school in gun incident
A 16-year-old student at the Southeast Career & Technical Academy was arrested at the campus Monday for having an unloaded, small-caliber handgun in his backpack, school district police said.
The gun was found in the boy's possession at about 1:15 p.m., said Lt. Ken Young, a spokesman with the Clark County School District police. Young said the student was observed acting strangely by school officials, who then decided to search the student's backpack. Young said the student did not threaten anybody at the school, formerly called Vo-Tech.
Young said the student was taken to the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with possession of a dangerous weapon on school property. The charge is a gross misdemeanor, Young said.
POSTPONEMENT DENIED
Darren Mack case ordered back to Reno
A judge ordered Darren Mack's case moved back to Reno and refused a defense motion on Monday to postpone the Jan. 17 sentencing as Mack tries to withdraw his guilty pleas in the killing of his wife and the shooting of a judge.
Clark County District Judge Douglas Herndon said it made more sense, both financially and based on local community interest, to reverse the change of venue that sent last month's trial to Las Vegas and return the high-profile case to its original jurisdiction in Washoe County.
Mack's new lawyer, William Routsis, unsuccessfully asked that the Jan. 17 sentencing be vacated. He said he will need more time to prepare for it if he fails to persuade Herndon during a hearing scheduled Jan. 15-16 to allow Mack to withdraw his pleas because he was confused and under duress at the time his previous defense team negotiated the deal.
Mack fired his previous lawyers, Scott Freeman of Reno and David Chesnoff of Las Vegas.
FORT APACHE ACCIDENT
Man, woman who died in crash identified
The two people killed Saturday on Fort Apache Road and Saddle Avenue when their 1993 Saturn was hit by a 2000 Jeep have been identified by the Clark County coroner's office as George David Covarrubias and Marjorie Covarrubias of Las Vegas.
According to Las Vegas police, the Saturn was traveling east on Saddle when George, 48, stopped at the stop sign at Fort Apache, but then drove into the intersection in front of the southbound Jeep, which had right of way, police said. Marjorie, 59, was a passenger in the Saturn.
CIMARRON ROAD
25-year-old who died in motorcycle crash ID'd
A 25-year-old motorcyclist killed after crashing on Cimarron Road just south of Buckskin Avenue on Sunday has been identified by the Clark County coroner's office as Miguel Parra of Las Vegas.
Parra was riding fast, headed south on Cimarron, on a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R about 5:30 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a curb on the east side of the road, Las Vegas police said.
