WALK TO SCHOOL
Police say girl escaped kidnapping attempt
A man attempted to kidnap a 10-year-old girl during her walk to school Thursday morning, police said.
About 7:45 a.m., the Crestwood Elementary School fourth-grader was on Franklin Avenue when a man driving a gray sport utility vehicle yelled at her to get in his car, Las Vegas police spokesman Jose Montoya said.
The girl ran the rest of the way to the school, at 1300 Pauline Way, less than a mile southwest of where Charleston Boulevard and Eastern Avenue intersect, and told adults what happened.
Police searched the area but were unable to find the man. He was described as Hispanic with dark hair and about 40 years old.
Anyone with information about the case can contact Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Discarded food wrappers were among clues leading to the arrest Thursday of five men who officials think started last month's massive Malibu, Calif., wildfire.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said the investigation took detectives to as far as the Oregon border, to a grocery store and to debit card records. It all was to track the men believed to have set an illegal campfire at a cave where the wildfire started.
The men were identified as Brian Allen Anderson, 22; William Thomas Coppock, 23; Brian David Franks, 27; Eric Matthew Ullman, 18; and Dean Allen Lavorante, 19. All five were in custody Thursday evening.
