Berkley to have mock presidential caucus

In an effort to educate people about the upcoming Democratic presidential caucus -- Nevada will hold the second presidential caucus in the nation on Jan. 19 -- Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley will have a "mock caucus" today at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Center, 101 Pavilion Center Drive, Summerlin.

In the "mockus," which is free and open to the public, participants will caucus for their favorite type of candy, instead of their favorite presidential candidate.

Graffiti vandal sent to jail for one year

The third and final defendant involved in a local graffiti gang was sentenced Tuesday in District Judge Stewart Bell's courtroom.

Corry Barnett, 19, received one year in the Clark County Detention Center and five years probation.

He received the same sentence as his co-defendants, Luis Gomez, 18, and Jason Thorpe, 21. All three were originally charged with one count of conspiracy to place graffiti or otherwise defacing property and placing graffiti to promote criminal gang activity.

They each pleaded guilty to one count of placing graffiti or otherwise defacing property, a felony, and were ordered to jointly pay $13,000 in restitution for damages.

According to the criminal complaint, the three were involved in a local gang called Evil Writers or Evil Ways.

Man in wheelchair hit, killed crossing street

A 72-year-old man died Monday from injuries he sustained after being hit while attempting to cross Lake Mead Parkway in his wheelchair.

Michael Malone of Henderson was trying to cross Lake Mead at Ivy Street, near Boulder Highway, about 8 p.m. when the driver of a Hummer, Keigen Reid McDonald, hit him.

McDonald, 19, was driving west on Lake Mead and did not see Malone in the roadway. Malone was not in a crosswalk, Henderson police said.

McDonald was not cited, and the accident remains under investigation.

Malone was taken to St. Rose de Lima Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Las Vegas fire damages auto repair shop

A two-alarm fire in a Highland Drive auto repair shop early Tuesday morning caused $100,000 in damage. A passing taxi driver noticed flames coming from a large commercial building at 2912 Highland, near Desert Inn Road, and notified authorities around 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters confined the flames to the office and parts room at Stuttgart Motors. A business next door to the automotive shop also had slight fire damage.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

20-year-old woman killed in crash named

The woman who died Sunday after the car in which she was riding crashed into a light pole at Church and Water streets was identified as Cami K. Coronado, 20, of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Coronado was traveling with John Wayne Ascencio, 23, of California. Ascencio, the driver of the Scion, fled from police after an officer attempted to pull him over for swerving in traffic on roadways in Henderson, police said.

Ascencio is charged with driving under the influence and causing a death.
