LAS VEGAS 2020

Comment sought on city's master plan

If you've got something to say about parks, transit and public buildings in the city of Las Vegas, now's your chance.

The city is asking for comments on updates to Las Vegas 2020 Master Plan, which analyzes existing city resources and sets goals for future amenities and services.

Copies of the three sections can be downloaded for free at www.lasvegasnevada.gov/planning, and written comments can be submitted there until 3 p.m. Oct. 25.

Compact discs of the draft language also are available for $5. They can be picked up at the Downtown Service Center, 731 S. Fourth St.

The Las Vegas Planning Commission will accept in-person comments at a meeting that starts at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 at City Hall.

HOMELAND SECURITY

St. Rose hospitals receive security grants

The three local St. Rose Dominican hospitals have each received $100,000 in federal security grants, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Friday.

St. Rose's San Martin, Siena and Rose de Lima campuses each received Urban Areas Security Initiative Nonprofit Security Grants.

The grants were part of $24 million in funds allocated to 24 states that the federal government considers at high risk of a terrorist attack.

The hospitals will spend the money on improving security, hospital Security Director Bernie Jones said.

"We'll install better video surveillance cameras, better security measures on doors, alarms, things of that nature," he said.

Jones said he believed the government awarded the hospitals the money because they "provide emergency treatment and care in a community that could be involved" in a terrorist attack.

The Department of Homeland Security awarded 308 such grants to medical centers, schools, temples and synagogues nationwide.
