IN BRIEF
DEMOCRATIC POLITICS
Assemblyman Horne endorses Clinton
Assemblyman William Horne, D-Las Vegas, announced Friday that he is endorsing Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., for president.
"Senator Clinton is the most qualified candidate in this exceptional field," said Horne, first elected to the Assembly in 2002. "She could walk into the Oval Office today and immediately begin the work of setting our country in the right direction."
Horne, 45, is one of four black members of the Assembly, and his choice of Clinton over Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is likely to be viewed as a noteworthy gain for Clinton in Nevada.
In a prepared statement, Horne said most Nevada families are working families, and Clinton "has throughout her career fought to make sure working families can meet their needs."
SCORCHING SUMMER CONTINUES
Weather service issues excessive heat watch
An excessive heat watch is in effect for this afternoon into this evening for the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service.
A building system of high pressure will bring unseasonably hot temperatures and humidity over the weekend. A high of 108 degrees is expected today.
An excessive heat watch means that temperatures are expected to create a situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible. People are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and stay in air-conditioned areas if possible.
