28-YEAR-OLD KILLED
Driver crashes car into stopped tractor-trailer
A 28-year-old man died Monday after his vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Silverado Ranch Boulevard near Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas police said.
Police said the tractor-trailer was stopped at a red light about 6:30 a.m. when the victim, driving a 2002 Ford Explorer, struck the back of the tractor-trailer.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Authorities withheld his name. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Carlos Villeda, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
MUSTANG CLIPS HONDA
One of two men who died in crash identified
One of two men killed Saturday morning after the car they were traveling in spun out of control and hit a power pole, wall and power box was identified as 28-year-old Justin Bush.
The other person killed has yet to be identified.
Police said Bush was driving a 1994 Ford Mustang east on Charleston Boulevard around 2:54 a.m. when he changed lanes east of 28th Street and clipped the left rear of a 2005 Honda Accord, which also was traveling east on Charleston.
The impact caused both vehicles to spin out of control. The Mustang came to a stop after crashing into the power pole, and the Honda hit with a nearby fire hydrant. Bush and one of his back-seat passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The car's other passenger, Joanne Farley, 27, who also was in the back seat, was taken to University Medical Center, police said.
FALLON SCHOOL FALLS SHORT
Churchill County High School principal quits
Churchill County High School Principal John Riley says he's resigning partly because the school in Fallon was labeled as being "in need of improvement" for three straight years.
As principal, Riley said it was his responsibility to rid the school of the label. He said he takes the federal No Child Left Behind requirement very seriously as well as its message to teach all groups of students.
Riley said most of his school's students are doing well on annual tests, but more than 100 students are not meeting the benchmarks.
"I am the person most responsible for that," Riley told the Lahontan Valley News & Fallon Eagle Standard newspaper. "We have not found a way to teach all the students."
The school district has directed E.C. Best Principal Scott Meihack to assist in efforts to improve achievement at the high school.
Riley's last day on the job will be Dec. 31.
Last week, the School Board added 18 months to Riley's tenure in the district so he would be fully vested in retirement benefits because he is not yet 65.
