CARSON CITY GANG ATTACK

Two teens to be tried as adults in stabbing

Two Carson City teens will be tried as adults in the gang-related stabbing of another teen as he was sleeping.

Adrian Garcia, 14, and Francisco Monroy, 15, along with a 17-year-old female, appeared before Justice of the Peace Robey Willis on Monday and will have a preliminary hearing Jan. 7.

The two males were automatically certified as adults because of the nature of the crime, said District Attorney Neil Rombardo. The female was remanded back to juvenile custody.

According to police, Garcia and Monroy entered an unlocked door of a 15-year-old from a rival gang and stabbed him repeatedly as he slept on the couch.

The teen woke up and fought back, chasing the two others to his front porch before he realized he had been stabbed. He is recovering from seven stab wounds.

GARDNERVILLE INVESTIGATION

Record meth bust raises concerns

A record methamphetamine bust in Gardnerville has officials both pleased and concerned.

They're pleased because they seized 9 pounds of methamphetamine worth an estimated $400,000, but they're concerned because meth arrests and seizures had been declining in Douglas County before Saturday night's bust.

The bust was the culmination of a monthlong investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Street Enforcement Team, working in conjunction with the Tri-Net Task Force, at a Gardnerville car wash.

Valdene Elaine Roberts, 57, of Gardnerville; Nayo Orozco-Ortiz, 28, of Carson City; and Crispin Pacheco, 35, of Carson City, were arrested after investigators received several tips about a meth shipment.

BULLHEAD CITY ACCIDENT

19-year-old killed in single-vehicle crash

A Bullhead City teen died early Monday after he wrecked the pickup truck he was driving in his hometown.

Just before 6 a.m., Leandro Hoyes, 19, was southbound on State Route 95 just past the Parkway intersection when the truck struck a curb and flipped onto its top, according to the Bullhead City Police Department. Hoyes was partially ejected and pinned under the cab, police said.

Police said Hoyes died of his injuries after arriving at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center.

SAN FRANCISCO ZOO

Tiger escapes from pen, kills one, mauls two

A tiger escaped from its pen at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday, killing one man and injuring two others before police shot it dead, authorities said.

The three men were in their 20s; they were together and were not zoo employees, San Francisco Police spokesman Steve Mannina said. They were attacked just after the 5 p.m. closing time outside the zoo's Terrace Cafe.

It was unclear how the tiger escaped or how long it was on the loose. Police arrived to find the tiger on top of a victim. The tiger then started moving toward approaching police officers, and they opened fire, Mannina said.
