LV police head to Ohio to recruit candidates

The Metropolitan Police Department is recruiting in the Cleveland area this week.

Because of Las Vegas' booming population, the agency will need to hire 300 officers each year for the next nine years, officials said.

Recruiter Angela McLellan said the department is finding lots of eager candidates who say finding jobs in law enforcement in Ohio is tough.

Court building reopens after elevator problem

The Nevada Supreme Court building in Carson City reopened Wednesday after being closed since Saturday because of a lingering burning-rubber smell caused by a malfunction of an elevator's hydraulic pump that spread oily smoke throughout the building.

No fire and no damage to court documents occurred.

California woman dies in three-vehicle crash

A resident of Needles, Calif., was killed Tuesday in a three-vehicle collision in the northwest Arizona community of Mohave Valley.

Gloria Ramirez, 20, was dead at the scene of the 4:30 p.m. crash on Arizona Route 95, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

Ramirez lost control of her southbound vehicle, which crossed over the center line and collided with an oncoming pickup and another vehicle. Four others hurt in the accident were hospitalized.

The crash remained under investigation Wednesday.

California teen falls from ski lift, dies

A teenager died after falling 25 feet from a ski lift at Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Ryan Donald Moore, 19, of Santa Ynez, Calif., fell about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday after leaning forward to rub a cramp in his leg, officials said.
