CAR HITS WALL

Man, woman in 70s die in Henderson crash

A 79-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman were pronounced dead after the car they were in hit a wall Thursday morning in Henderson, police said.

About 11:30 a.m., their gold Toyota Camry was swerving in and out of oncoming traffic as it headed east on Paseo Verde Parkway near Green Valley Parkway, witnesses told police. The Camry veered off Paseo Verde and struck a wall near Green Valley Parkway, police said.

Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck. Both victims were wearing seat belts. Their identities were withheld by police.

Autopsies will be conducted by the Clark County coroner's office.

2003 SHOOTING DEATH

25-year-old sentenced in slaying of teenager

The man who killed 13-year-old Tanisha Turner during a gang-related gunfight in 2003 was sentenced Thursday to nine to 25 years in prison.

Robert Hayes, 25, was arrested in June 2004 in connection with the shooting.

On Nov. 20, 2003, Turner was walking home in the 1900 block of Hassell Avenue, near Martin Luther King and Lake Mead boulevards, as a botched drug deal erupted into a gunbattle. Turner was struck in the head by a stray bullet from a gun that police believe Hayes fired.

Hayes pleaded guilty in April to voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon and conspiracy to commit murder.

His defense attorney, Bret Whipple, and prosecutors had agreed upon and recommended the sentence to District Judge James Bixler.

Hayes apologized in court to his and the victim's family.
