DRIVER JAILED

Woman dies after being hit on sidewalk by car

A 49-year-old Las Vegas woman was killed when she was struck by a car that drove onto the sidewalk next to Arville Street near Flamingo Road about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Las Vegas police said.

The 28-year-old driver, Montrie Ledford of Las Vegas, was booked into jail on a charge of felony driving under the influence involving a death, police said.

The victim, whose name was withheld by authorities, was on the sidewalk about 270 feet south of Nevso Drive when the 2006 Ford Focus came up onto the sidewalk hitting her, police said. The Ford then struck a light pole and a power box.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

50 YEARS OF OPERATION

Residents celebrate closure of landfill

Residents cheered at a ceremony celebrating the closure of a California landfill that accepted trash for 50 years.

Garbage trucks drove into the Bradley Landfill for the last time Saturday, when the dump's permits expired.

The Los Angeles City Council refused to allow the 209-acre landfill, located in the Sun Valley section of the San Fernando Valley, to expand.

Residents held a ceremony at which children carried signs reading "That's All Folks" and "Good-bye Bradley Landfill."

Landfill owner Waste Management will work on creating a fully enclosed, 100,000-square-foot transfer and recycling center.

The dump's 250 employees will keep their jobs but operations will focus on hauling in dirt to cover the landfill.

NEGLIGENCE CASE

Doctor's medical license revoked after incident

A California doctor had his medical license revoked after failing to take basic steps to treat a patient with signs of a heart attack, the California Medical Board decided.

The board's decision, issued Friday, accused Demetrius DeVaughn Hines of gross negligence, repeated negligent acts, incompetence and failure to keep and maintain adequate medical records in connection to the treatment of a 52-year-old male admitted to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital in Tracy, Calif., in January 2004 complaining of chest pain.

Hines could not be located for comment on Sunday.

The accusation against Hines was filed by the medical board on Dec. 19, following an investigation. Hines failed to file a defense within the 15 days allotted, thus waiving his right to a hearing. His license was revoked by default, the board said.
