HOUSE GUTTED

Police arrest man in string of arson fires

Authorities arrested a man suspected of setting at least eight fires in Henderson on Friday that caused about $600,000 in damage and left a house gutted.

The suspect, who was arrested Saturday in Boulder City, wasn't identified by authorities.

Authorities booked the suspect into the Henderson Detention Center on two counts of first-degree arson, seven counts of third-degree arson and one count of petty larceny.

The Henderson Fire Department said the man is suspected of setting fires near the corner of Fletcher Road and Ivanpah Drive, which is close to Eastern and Serene avenues. Firefighters were called to the area about 4:15 a.m. Friday and found the home, a vehicle and several trash bins on fire.

Firefighters put out the blazes after about 20 minutes.

BRAKES STOPPED FALL

Three people injured when elevator drops

Three people suffered minor injuries when an elevator descended rapidly and made a "hard landing" in Fitzgeralds about 2 p.m. Sunday, a hotel spokeswoman said.

Nine people, one cart full of luggage and a bellman were in the elevator when it fell, but emergency brakes kept it from hitting the bottom of the shaft, said vice president of marketing Teresa Malm.

"It was a hard landing but all the individuals exited the elevator of their own volition," Malm said.

The elevator might have been overloaded, said Las Vegas Fire and Rescue deputy chief Mike Myers.

Two adults and one child suffered minor orthopedic injuries and they were taken to a hospital, he said.
