SINGLE-VEHICLE WRECK

Arizona deputy killed in Interstate 40 crash

A deputy with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office was killed Saturday night when he rolled his patrol car on Interstate 40 about 13 miles south of Kingman, Ariz., authorities said.

Sheriff Tom Sheahan said the death of 21-year-old Philip A. Rodriguez was the first on-duty fatality the agency has had in 20 years.

Sheahan said Rodriguez had been on patrol in the Mohave Valley area and was returning to his home in Golden Valley when the single-vehicle wreck occurred at 11:05 p.m. Because the deputy had been assigned a take-home patrol car, he was classified as on-duty from the time he left his home until he returned home, officials said.

Arizona Department of Public Safety investigators said Rodriguez was ejected when his patrol car left the interstate and rolled several times.

Sheahan said the deputy was not responding to a call at the time of the wreck.

Rodriguez served as an explorer scout with the sheriff's office as a youth before becoming a detention officer. He had served as deputy for less than one year.

LOGANDALE TRAILS DEATH

24-year-old man dies in ATV crash at dunes

A 24-year-old man operating an all-terrain vehicle was killed Saturday when another ATV landed on top of him in a trails area near Logandale, police said.

The fatal crash occurred about 5:15 p.m. at the Logandale Trails about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Christopher Frehner of Logandale was riding a 2006 Suzuki 400 ATV up one side of a sand dune at the same time that 18-year-old Billy Pulsipher of Moapa was riding a 2004 Honda TRX 450 ATV up the opposite side of the dune.

Pulsipher launched over the top of the dune and landed on Frehner, police said. Authorities pronounced Frehner dead at the scene of the wreck. Frehner wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, police said.

Pulsipher was airlifted to University Medical Center with minor injuries. Police said he is not facing any charges.

KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

Former conjoined twin released from hospital

A former conjoined twin has been discharged from a Salt Lake City hospital less than three weeks after receiving a kidney from her mother, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Maliyah Herrin's mother, Erin Herrin, donated a kidney to the 5-year-old in a seven-hour operation on April 3.

Born fused at the torso, Maliyah and her sister, Kendra, were separated in August.

While surgeons divided some of their shared organs, Kendra kept their one functioning kidney. Maliyah had dialysis treatments until doctors determined she was ready for the transplant.
