44-year-old man dies in North Las Vegas jail

A 44-year-old North Las Vegas man in jail on charges of driving under the influence died Wednesday, authorities said.

The man was found unresponsive in a cell in the North Las Vegas Detention Center about 3:30 p.m. He was taken to North Vista Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, North Las Vegas police said.

The Clark County Coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, but it appears the man died from natural causes, police said.

The man was booked into the jail on Tuesday.

His identity was withheld by police.

Copper thieves hit Salvation Army store

The Salvation Army is pleading with copper thieves to leave their stores alone after $70,000 in damage was done to air conditioning units.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store at Lamb Boulevard and Washington Avenue has been targeted by thieves three times in the past four months, according to Salvation Army spokesman Charles Desiderio. The thieves took copper tubing from air conditioning units.

The Salvation Army put up chain-link fences and light sensors, but that hasn't stopped the thefts, Desiderio said.

Thieves also hit the Salvation Army on Yale Street, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Interstate 15 in North Las Vegas, where the charity has a store, warehouse and rehabilitation residence. Six air conditioning units were destroyed there, Desiderio said.
