PRELIMINARY HEARING IN WYOMING

Utah man bound over to court to face charges in naked rampage

The case against a Utah man accused of a naked rampage on Interstate 80 has advanced to Wyoming state district court.

Armando Juan Cano of Moroni, Utah, had a preliminary hearing in Rock Springs circuit court Wednesday.

Sweetwater County Prosecuting Attorney John Prokos said Cano was bound over to district court on felony charges of aggravated burglary, possession of a deadly weapon with unlawful intent and two counts of aggravated assault and battery.

Authorities said the 26-year-old rammed another vehicle, fired shots from a stolen handgun and ran naked in traffic the night of June 23 on I-80 in south-central Wyoming.

Cano's defense lawyer, Tom Burnside, declined comment on the case.

BILLINGS, MONT., POLICE GET ANOTHER DUTY

Shippers, fearing federal law, send police medical marijuana

The Billings Police Department says it has become a pot delivery service for medical marijuana growers in Montana because shipping companies that may be open to prosecution under federal laws refuse to handle the drug .

Billings Police Chief Rich St. John said FedEx and UPS call police when workers discover packages that appear to contain medical marijuana that's legal in Montana.

FedEx spokeswoman Sally Davenport said the company won't take the risk of being prosecuted under federal law for accepting such shipments, even within Montana.

John said police must then pick up the package and determine if it's legal, then notify the person who sent it or deliver the package themselves. Police said they could be held liable if they don't return the pot to its rightful owner.

INTERSTATE 5 IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Big-rig truck loses brakes, starts chain reaction crash

Authorities said three people including a California Highway Patrol officer were injured when a big-rig truck lost its brakes, hit speeds of up to 85 miles per hour and started a chain-reaction crash before flipping and catching fire on Interstate 5 near the Los Angeles County-Kern County line.

California Highway Patrol officer Michelle Sigmond said the drivers of all three vehicles had minor injuries when the runaway truck hit a CHP cruiser which in turn hit another car Saturday morning. She said the officer was attempting to clear the freeway to make way for the truck.

The tractor-trailer flipped on the shoulder, caught fire and spilled diesel fuel across the roadway.

The CHP briefly closed the freeway's entire northbound side near Lebec, then slowly began reopening lanes. Truckers and travelers leaving the Los Angeles area for the holiday weekend faced hours of gridlock.
