Driver flees scene after car strikes, kills pedestrian

A 50-year-old Las Vegas resident who was walking outside of the marked crosswalk on a central valley street Friday night was fatally struck by a driver who then fled the scene, Las Vegas police said Saturday.

The dead person's identity and gender were not released by authorities.

The incident occurred about 7:35 p.m. near Flamingo Road and Maryland Parkway.

Police said the pedestrian was walking from the south side of Flamingo to the north side. A vehicle described as a four-door sedan was traveling west on Flamingo when it struck the pedestrian.

Police said the car sustained front-end damage and the driver fled the scene.

Car going wrong way on U.S. 95 hits two motorcyclists

A motorcyclist was killed Saturday morning when he was struck by a car going the wrong way on U.S. Highway 95, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

Trooper Joseph Fackrell said an elderly driver was traveling south in a Subaru on northbound U.S. 95 shortly after 10 a.m. close to the Decatur Boulevard turnoff when the car struck two motorcyclists.

One of the motorcyclists died and the other sustained injuries, Fackrell said.

The Subaru's driver was not hurt. Alcohol did not seem to be a factor, and the driver may have "just been confused," Fackrell said.

Traffic on northbound U.S. 95 was backed up for hours while troopers worked the accident scene.

Fires to thin underbrush
along Lake Tahoe shoreline

Forest Service officials say their fuels management crews will be out at Lake Tahoe next week to conduct fire operations around Kings Beach on the north end of the lake and Meeks Bay on the west shore.

Residents and travelers can expect to see smoke from the project areas beginning Monday and through the week.

The effort is designed to thin out the underbrush to reduce wildfire risks to communities and critical resources.
