Is it Clear to you?
Several readers commented on my recent column on Clear 4G wireless broadband service (http://bit.ly/43tc2C). Some had good experiences similar to mine, which resulted in a thumbs-up for the new Internet service provider in Southern Nevada. Others saw the flip side, resulting in frustration and poor connectivity.
Reader Wilda McMurry said she lives in the far northwestern Las Vegas Valley and couldn’t get a reliable signal to keep her Clear modem working without interruption. McMurry said the clerk at the shipping company she used to return her Clear equipment said he'd had others in the area return Clear gear for the same reason.
A co-worker of mine who lives in the northwestern valley and has been using Clear for several months was having sporadic, spotty coverage. He reports that the signal was significantly stronger and consistently reliable when he returned home in mid-September after a 10-day vacation. Clear company officials told me they are constantly upgrading their coverage and acknowledge some spots of the valley don't yet have optimal signal strength.
Reader FastTracker commented: "After using their home modem for three months, it's been stable, consistently delivering download speeds in the 4-6 megabit-per-second range. Also, I am using a voice-over-Internet-protocol telephone option with Clear — not the service that they sell — which has worked well.
"There was one late night outage lasting nine hours,î FastTracker added, ìbut I've also lost Cox service for some 32 hours, so I'll cut them a bit of slack on that issue. Their coverage in Las Vegas is widespread, but still spotty in places. Hopefully in the near future, Clear will fill in those holes.
"The bottom line: Clear is the first high-speed Internet provider to give the cable and telephone duopoly serious competition, something we've needed for a long time, and obviously good news for the consumer."
Reader Kristi writes: "I have been using Clear for a few weeks and the service has been great so far. I used to have a AT&T mobile card and Clear is much faster. I signed up at the store on Arroyo Grande (Boulevard) and Warm Springs (Road) and they got me set up with a home and mobile service for only $50 a month. They also gave me a gift card for signing up.
"Saving money and great speeds,î Kristi added. “I am happy to say the least."
