KUCHAR TAKES EARLY SECOND-ROUND LEAD
The afternoon groups have teed off at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and Zach Johnson has some work to do if he wants to keep his spot atop the leader board.
Matt Kuchar was the star of the morning, posting a 9-under-par 63 to take over the lead by a couple of shots.
Marc Turnesa, who had a share of the lead with Johnson going into today’s second round, stumbled late in his round, taking a double bogey at the par-3 17th. But Turnesa bounced back by making eagle at the par-4 18th to reclaim a share of the lead with an 8-under 64.
LOCAL BOY DOES GOOD
Former UNLV All-American Ryan Moore also had it going this morning, shooting 8-under 64 to move to 14-under. He was tied for fourth.
Moore has former UNLV teammate Troy Denton caddying for him this weekend, and Moore said Denton is helping to keep him loose out on the course.
“We always have fun out there when we’re together,” Moore said.
Moore once again was wearing a headband as he played his round. “I’m always trying to stay on the cutting edge of fashion,” he said with a laugh.
WHO LET THE DOGS IN?
If there was a national award for chutzpah, it would go to the woman who tried to sneak her dog into the tournament Friday.
The woman placed her dog, reportedly a toy Schnauzer weighing a couple of pounds, into her Louis Vutton bag as she passed through security. When the pooch was discovered, the woman claimed it was, get this, her “seeing-eye dog.”
The woman and her dog were denied entry to the grounds, and she left TPC Summerlin in a huff.
On second thought, maybe they should have let the dog in. Imagine the fun watching it run around the fairway chasing down some poor golfer’s ball and scooping it up in its mouth. It would have definitely spiced things up.
CROWDS PICK UP
Obviously, it’s easier to ditch work on a Friday than on a Thursday.
TPC Summerlin was much busier for Round 2 with lots of traffic on the grounds. It bodes well for the tournament this weekend as the weather is expected to hold up with temperatures in the mid-80s and no wind.
